Frequently Asked Questions

Do you use particle board for your laminate covers?

Yes. We can and will build cabinet covers out of many materials and substitue as a customer wishes... however, laminate manufacturers still reccomend industrial flake/particle board for adhesion, stability, and similar expansion/contraction rates when subject to changes in temperature/humidity.

Can you build a frame in multiple widths and heights?

Yes. The past decade has seen a huge increase in the popular H-frame and T-frame bulkheads, but we have built bulkheads twenty feet long in as many as five different widths!

Are we required to purchase the covers?

No. We send uncovered bulkhead out on a regular basis for those wishing to use a local cabinet shop or tin shop to custom cover on location.

I have an older bulkhead. Can I just get new covers?

Yes... and it may be easier than you think. Unless removed, all DFC bulkheads should have the original serial number located on the electrical panel cover. With this number we can completely rebuild your choice of covers to the original specifications. If there have been modifications in equipment or the frame, or even if it wasn't originally our bulkhead, we merely need the length, width, and height of the frame to build custom covers.

Why do you use angle iron instead of tube steel?

Angle iron is more durable during shipping and much easier as well as available to work, modify, or repair in the field. It provides no internal moisture reservoirs for unseen corrosion, and 1/8" steel more readily holds metal screws. More information available uner the 'Our Frames' menu.

Why do you use copper in lieu of PEX or other plastic waterline material?

Copper is more structurally sound than other more flexible materials, thus allowing for more distance between supports and therefore less obstruction behind washers for service. It provides a mechanical ground and is less prone to internal and unseen algae growth. More information available under the 'Our Waterlines' menu.

My plumber says I have to insulate the waterlines to prevent corrosion. Is this true?

A strong no, yet sometimes a weak yes. One of the greatest myths in the plumbing industry has come from the misunderstanding of galvanic corrosion, otherwise known as 'electrolysis'. This corrosion occurs when small electrical current travels down two disimilar metals immersed in the same electrolytic solution, in other words when two fittings of different metallic materials are connected in the same waterline (i.e. galvanized fitting to copper). The contact of external metals to a copper waterline does not create this issue. That said, a very few building departments and some municipalities have addendums to the NPC and older UPC code books superceding those codes' definitions of galvanic corrosion/electrolysis, and they may insist on insulation.

My inspector says that something must be changed to meet the requirements. What do I do?

First and foremost- call us immediately. DO NOT PROCEED WITH ANY CHANGES TO A BULKHEAD BEFOREHAND. There are numerous things that even the best architect or journeyman technichian may not understand about certain procedures of our bulkhead construction. The overwhelming majority of issues can be rectified with a quick phone call or email. That said, in spite of our longevity and knowledge we are upon rare occasion caught by a code change, and at such time we will expediently rectify any issues to code specifications.
